The Business of Entertainment
Our educational aims are based on our understanding of the film and television producer’s role as combining artistic, organizational and commercial abilities.
The producer is a film artist together with and in the service of the other artists – the screenwriter, director, cinematographer, editor, soundtrack composer and many others – who are all working together on a shared vision. The producer is a motor, partner, idea contributor, decision-maker, and organizer of a collective passion. Finally, the producer bears a great deal of financial and personal responsibility and thus has a great interest in the success of his or her product.
Based on these principles, the teaching and student activities making up this program are oriented to the current requirements prescribed by the professional standards of the German and international film and television market. The goal is to qualify students for a smooth transition into their chosen profession.
In seminars and lectures we cultivate both creative abilities, e.g. through courses in dramaturgy, directing, cinematography/image composition and project development, and the technical and organizational skills required for script assessment, shooting-schedule design, costing and financing in preproduction, shooting and postproduction phases as well as marketing. Other teaching themes include media and labor law along with interpersonal aspects such as project-pitching, management and leadership. This comprehensive training program is supplemented by guided visits to film and television festivals, markets and trade fairs as well as special interdisciplinary workshops.
Lectures and seminars are held by well-known professionals from the film and television sector. This not only ensures that students are kept up to date with current developments but also provides them with direct contact to the industry while they are still studying.
Practical work on student film productions forms a crucial part of this program and involves working in the fields of feature film, advertising film, education and science film, series formats, documentary film, interactive media, animation and digital image composition. Production students cooperate with their colleagues from the Screenwriting, Image Composition/Cinematography, Directing, Cinematic Experimentation, Animation, Montage/Editing and Film Music/Sound Design programs and assume particular responsibility as production managers and creative producers.
The Production program includes the electives Animation & Vfx Producing, Creative Producing, Interactive Media Producing, International Producing and Series Producing. Moreover, a number of highly qualified students are given the opportunity to take part in a workshop in Los Angeles over several weeks. Graduates can also decide to apply for the one-year postgraduate program of the Ludwigsburg/Paris Master Class.
Apart from providing students with specialist expertise in their field, this program aims to provide them with the scope to develop their own personal style. Our fundamental goal is to help students discover and consolidate their individuality as producers. Ideally, when students leave us they will have recognized the genre and type of material they would most like to work with, identified their personal preferences, strengths and weaknesses, and become more fully aware of their own creativity and distinctiveness.
