GENDER EQUALITY IN PRACTICE AT GERMAN FILM SCHOOLS

In February 2018, an initiative was founded by the Deutsche Film- und Fernsehakademie Berlin (dffb), the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF, the Hochschule für Film und Fernsehen München (HFF), the ifs internationale filmschule Köln, the Kunsthochschule für Medien Köln (KHM) and the Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg, which has positioned itself with the goals of creating awareness for gender representation in film, making women strong for the film business, being committed to the zero-tolerance principle in dealing with sexualized violence and any form of discrimination, and signaling in the universities: We think and work in a gender-equal way.

The Gender and Diversity in Progress program, newly launched in the 2018/2019 academic year, offers staff, faculty, and students regular workshops, coaching sessions, and seminars on the topic of gender equality and provides a platform for open and fair exchange.

In February 2020 representatives of the German film schools presented their activities for GENDER EQUALITY together with Dr. Maria Furtwängler.

In everyday university life for students, lecturers and employees
At all universities, work has been done on the further development of plans for the advancement of women or equality concepts. Central points in these are the increase in the number of female professors, gender parity in the composition of committees, the development of guidelines to prevent abuse of power, discrimination, sexual harassment and violence, and the establishment of ombudsman offices for external and neutral advice in such cases. The Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg invited all faculty and staff to a closed meeting on the topic of "Gender & Diversity".

Closing ranks with the industry
With the MaLisa Foundation, which Dr. Maria Furtwängler founded together with her daughter Elisabeth, the initiative of the German film schools is supported by an important partner with a bridge to the industry. The MaLisa Foundation is committed to social diversity and overcoming restrictive role models in the media, and thus always with an eye on what is currently happening in the industry.
