At Carl Laemmle Institut for Research & Media Innovation, researchers, engineers and artists work together to develop future technologies for Film, Animation, VFX and XR Immersive Media.
A major focus is on Non-linear Technologies, Artificial Intelligence, Cross Innovation and the development of ecologically-sustainable technologies that are pioneering in film and media production.
The Carl Laemmle Institut (CLI) complements the educational function of Filmakademie. In collaboration with partners in Germany and abroad, the department engages in research projects, developing technological innovations for the film and media world.
One major focus is the development of technologies that serve as the basis for ecologically sustainable productions at Filmakademie, its Animationsinstitut and beyond. Extended reality (XR) is a key technology in this context.
Artificial intelligence also has a strong influence on the creative processes of the film and media industry. It represent major opportunities and challenges. The focus of AI developments within the CLI is on the fair and traceable use of AI systems that support artists, but do not replace them.
The majority of the tools and software developed are available to all interested parties as Open-Source. In addition to Open-Access publications, extensive data collections are available to the entire creative industry under Creative Commons. This provides a comprehensive technological foundation for sovereign future developments.

In VISTA, a virtual immersive location and architecture platform, CLI partners up with RECOM Film and lohrmannarchitekten, as well as Wirtschaftsregion Stuttgart (WRS) to develop a platform for the automated production, administration and use of photorealistic digital twins of real locations. Real environments are efficiently transformed into high quality 3D models.
The project is funded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism of Baden-Württemberg.
There was only very blurry video footage of Hans-Dietrich Genscher’s speech on the balcony of the Prague Embassy in 1989, when he announced the opening of the border to East German citizens. The Carl Laemmle Institute has recreated this historic event in “Prague 89” using AI – crystal clear and now offering a completely different viewing experience.

Filmakademie Baden-Württemberg’s Carl Laemmle Institut (CLI) and Filmakademie's AI Officer (Nira Bozkurt) have brought to life the project “GenAI Compass” to do justice to the current urgent demand for a well-founded and practical basis for decision making in the use of generative AI.
During its one-year runtime, the GenAI Compass will execute a systematic and sound evaluation of current and potential new GenAI tools for image and video generation under production conditions of the creative industries.
With the living lab Industrial Metaverse Reallabor (IMRL), CLI and project partners Fraunhofer IAO/IPA and ARENA2036 join forces to bring XR technologies to SMEs. Companies from all industry can get into contact with the RLMV to check their use of XR applications. Quick checks and exploring projects turn into demonstrators – to achieve use cases of how Metaverses’ potentials can be exploited by the regional economy.

The Carl Laemmle Institute sees itself as a point of contact for all departments and specialisations at the Film Academy. Historically, there has been a close link with the Technical Directing specialisation at the Animation Institute. This specialisation has been successfully established by the Director of the CLI over the last 20 years.
Technical Directing (TD) is aimed at graduates of computer science or similar disciplines. Their involvement in the Film Academy’s research activities is an integral part of the curriculum and provides students with wide-ranging insights into the technological possibilities of film and media production.
Graduates of the Technical Directing programme are in high demand within the industry. Through various forms of specialisation, they make cutting-edge film and media productions possible and take them to the next level.
