FAQ about applying to the Film Academy

To facilitate the application process for you, we have compiled a list of frequently asked questions (and their answers).

Answer: Typically 12 months for foundation courses in film + media, and typically 12 months for production courses.

Answer: Apprenticeships/work experience in the film and media industries.

Answer: Yes. If you cannot provide a general secondary school leaving certificate, it may be possible to prove a “special talent” by sitting an aptitude test.

Answer: The Film Academy does not offer apprenticeships.

Answer: Apprenticeships must be completed before the start of the programme of study, but you should provide evidence that you will have had at least 6 months’ experience before the deadline for applications.

Answer: You can apply to the Film Academy 3 times.

Answer: Lateral entry is generally possible for project-based study.

Answer: Please follow the specified guidelines. It cannot be guaranteed that longer work samples will be considered.

Answer: Yes, in principle. More information is available from the Examinations Office.

Answer: As of the Summer semester 2012, the payment of tuition fees has been waived.

Answer: The course ends with a diploma. Pursuant to Film Academy legislation, Film Academy Baden-Württemberg GmbH belongs to the tertiary education sector. Programmes of study which are successfully completed at the Film Academy are legally equivalent to vocational qualifications from state art schools. The Film Academy is not a state university. It is (100%) a subsidiary of the State of Baden-Württemberg. It is therefore not accredited by the German Science and Humanities Council.
