Effects Artist

Effects Artist

The Animation study major is divided into two streams, foundation and project studies, both of which are two years in duration, whereby foundation studies are compulsory for all Film Academy students. Project studies at the Animationsinstitut allow students the opportunity to focus on their own projects as well as specializing in a chosen study area.

Effects Artist is one of the four specializations within the subject area Animation. Students who choose the specialization Effects Artist have the possibility to pursue their paths as VFX Artist, VFX Supervisor or Effects Director.

  • VFX Artist is responsible for the design and integration of digital sets, props, effects and characters. This includes the planning of visual effects scenes, pre-visualization, set supervision, recording and editing of film material, creation of computer-animated material, compositing and finishing.
  • The VFX Supervisor is responsible for the planning and artistic realisation of effects for live-action film sequences.
  • The Effects Director assumes the overall responsibility of a project – from the initial idea to post production. Throughout the preparation and realization of a project the Effects Director is the contact point for all artistic decisions.

The structure of Animation project studies is based on the production of animation and VFX projects and divided into five production stages. At the end of each stage the students have to achieve specific milestones to ensure that the project can enter the next phase. Throughout the different phases production teams are supervised by visiting lecturers. The Head of Production and the project coordinators mentor the project process.
