Sound is Not Just About Music!

At the beginning of the Winter semester 2010 the Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg expanded its Film Music and Sound Design programme to include the specialization Sound/Sound design. Students gain specialist knowledge in sound recording and sound design for film. The two-year study course concentrates on two specific occupational profiles: Sound Engineer for Original Sound, and Sound Engineer for Post-production/Sound Design. Students work in various film formats including; feature film, documentaries, animation, series, and promotional film.

This field of study is primarily practice-oriented. Students are involved in all aspects of sound for film production: original on-set sound recording, post-production sound, dialogue editing, Foley (creation of sound effects) and Foley editing, effects, sound design, music recording and mixing and final film soundtrack mixing. Together with the film music department. the recording and mixing of film music performed by small ensembles and large orchestras is also possible.

The Filmakademie has studios for recording and mixing, midi studios, and post-production suites, as well as the first Dolby Atmos film mixer to be used by a European film academy.

Through our concept of interdisciplinary teaching, students specializing in film sound/sound design also have the chance to gain experience in other departments.
